There are countless reasons to love San Francisco and you probably get sick of hearing me list them on this blog over and over again. But I just love my city too much not to appreciate all of the little things that add up to something really special to me. One of such things is the mild weather and the San Franciscan’s love of a good picnic. I have a picnic bag packed nearly year round that’s ready to be thrown in the car for a trip to Napa or slung over my shoulder for a quick walk down the block to my local park. I consider myself a pretty professional picnic-er by this point in my San Francisco “career.” There’s nothing I love more than throwing open my blanket, kicking off my shoes and settling down to a good cheese plate and a little cocktail.
I’m all about keeping it local so I was so excited to team up with the folks at Hangar 1 Vodka to create this special picnic-inspired cocktail. I have been requesting their vodka for years at my local bar. I love the smooth flavor especially when it’s mixed into a cocktail. The vodka’s home is just across the Bay in Alameda (where I frequent the flea market) in an old WWII plane hangar (hence the name, wink, wink).
This cocktail is easy to make and has a lovely light floral taste due to the rose water and the elderflower syrup. You can find elderflower syrup at specialty cocktail stores and a few Cost Plus’. I also have been dying to make these beautiful flower ice cubes for a while. They are easy if you can find edible flowers at your local farmer’s market or Whole Foods. They really make the cocktail (or even your plain water) beautiful.
Ingredients (for one cocktail)
2 oz Hangar 1 Straight Vodka
1 tsp Elderflower syrup
1 ½ tsp Rose Water
4 oz Soda Water
Pour 2 oz vodka over ice in a glass. Add elderflower syrup, rose water and lemon juice. Top with soda water and stir.
Then pack it up and bring it outside to enjoy under the sunshine (ideally amongst a field of daisies).
