GROWN UP KRISPIES

So it started out innocent enough, I wanted to make a yummy but not too unhealthy treat for desert. Rice crispy squares are a good choice because they dont have much butter in them and they last for awhile. 


So I went about buying the ingredients...I looked on the box and got out all of the ingredients. Then I thought...how can I make these grown-up and even more delicious than the traditional treat. 


Answer: use browned butter and add in some orange zest. Browning the butter gives it this lovely, rich carmel-ey taste and the orange zest is expected but so delicious.  




Orange and Browned Butter Rice Krispies 
(adapted from here)


3 Tbsp of Butter
1 package of small marshmallows 
6 cups of Rice Krispies 
1 Tbsp of Orange Zest
1 Package of chocolate chips (optional) 


1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Continue cooking until butter stops foaming and browned bits form at bottom of pan, stirring often, about 5 minutes.


2. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add orange zest. Remove from heat.


3. Add RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

4. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. 



It is optional (and totally delicious) if you add melted chocolate on top.
